Musical Responses to a Crisis of Faith

The sixteenth century saw the fragmentation of the Western church and a reaffirmation of the Catholic faith, transforming sacred music throughout Europe. Our program features works by Le Jeune, Senfl, Byrd, and others active during these decades of religious upheaval.

Beyond the Gamut - Chromaticism in the Renaissance

Convivium explores the unique soundscape of Renaissance chromaticism, works employing those notes—written down or implied—that lay outside the standard “gamut” of available pitches. Lassus, Gesualdo, and Hassler will be among the featured composers.
